Just wanted to pass along an announcement from Joseph Campbell Foundation about the formal release of Masks of God: Oriental Mythology, the newest ebook in the Collected Works of Joseph Campbell! It’s a project that we’ve been working on for more than a year, and are pleased to see come to fruition.
The ebook, the first release in a digital edition of the Masks of God series, explores the evolution of the myths of the Middle East and Asia from the dawn of history up until modern times, looking at how they have changed from country to country and millennium to millennium, and how they’ve remained the same.
The ebook is currently available only on the foundation’s website, JCF.org, as a thank you gift for donations of $9.99 and greater.
The Flowering of Myth in Asia
JCF is pleased to announce the electronic publication of Oriental Mythology, available for digital download as our thank you to Associates when you donate $9.99 to the Foundation.
In this second volume of The Masks of God—Joseph Campbell’s major work of comparative mythology—the pre-eminent mythologist looks at Asian mythology as it developed over the course of five thousand years into the distinctive religions of Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, and Japan.
The Masks of God is a four-volume study of world religion and myth that stands as one of Joseph Campbell’s masterworks. On completing it, he wrote: Its main result for me has been the confirmation of a thought I have long and faithfully entertained: of the unity of the race of man, not only in its biology, but also in its spiritual history, which has everywhere unfolded in the manner of a single symphony, with its themes announced, developed, amplified and turned about, distorted, reasserted, and today, in a grand fortissimo of all sections sounding together, irresistibly advancing to some kind of mighty climax, out of which the next great movement will emerge.
This new digital edition, part of the Collected Works of Joseph Campbell series, includes over forty new illustrations. The other three volumes of this series are in the process being revised, edited, and formatted for digital release.
Be sure to select whether your download should be in .mobi format (used primarily by Kindle) or ePub (the Nook reader, iBooks, and most non-Amazon devices).
