Interview — David Kudler on Independent Publishing

David KudlerI had the opportunity to talk recently with Inkspokes, a site for indie authors and their readers — we discussed some of the joys (and pitfalls) of independent publishing.  The interview is out, and I think it’s pretty interesting, if I do say so myself!

Here’s a snippet to whet your appetite:

Books are infinitely perfectible. The traditional publishing process and a bazillion MFA writing programs have conditioned us to think that no book is ever ready — that they must be workshopped and rewritten and workshopped again. And again.

What's an Independent Publisher?

So, I was astonished earlier this month to find myself elected president of BAIPA — the Bay Area Independent Publishers Association.

You may call me Mr. President.

Born in the early, heady days of the desktop publishing revolution, BAIPA is a wonderful collection of folks involved in various parts of the non-corporate end of the publishing industry who get together to swap knowledge and offer services and listen to expert speakers give information about the esoterica of the publishing craft. We’ve got authors, editors, designers, publicists — if it’s got to do with the creation of books (in whatever form) and their sale, there’s someone there who can help. The collective is capable of creating books that are every bit as polished and attractive as those put out by the Big Five publishers. (Is it still five, by the way?)

I’ve learned a lot at BAIPA meetings. I’d like to think I’ve also managed to share some helpful information.

Meetings always start off with a free-form Q&A session. It gives people the chance to ask whatever burning question they may have up front; the BAIPA hivemind then sets about answering the question.

A few weeks ago, at the first meeting that I ran as president, no one had any questions to ask up front. This sometimes happens, so I threw out a question that I hoped would spark some interesting conversation: What exactly is an independent publisher? Continue reading What's an Independent Publisher?

Long Gone Daddies hits the road

John F. Blair Publishers have approved the Stillpoint Digital audiobook production Long Gone Daddies, narrated by David Kudler. A real departure from our earlier releases, David Wesley Williams’s twelve-bar blues of a novel is an exploration of love, fame, and the roots of song. Oh — and fathers and sons, as the name implies.

Publishers Weekly said, “This lyrical multi-generational musician’s tale marks veteran newspaperman Williams’s impressive first novel. . . . The historical backdrop, including a cameo by young Elvis as a busboy, adds delightful texture and rich depth to Williams’s fictional account of the early days of rock ‘n roll.” Foreword Reviews called it “a bluesy, smoke-tinged story of a man, his guitar, and the family lore that haunts and threatens to dismantle his future…At once dreamy and wild, a churning, soul-searching trip into the root of music making. Readers will find in this novel an immersive and imaginative experience.”

The book should be available for purchase in another couple of weeks, but in the mean time, here’s a taste:

Apart from Love by Uvi Poznansky

Audible has released Stillpoint’s audiobook production of Uvi Poznansky’s contemporary novel of family drama, romance, and intrigue, Apart from Love.

Narrated by David Kudler and Heather Jane Hogan, Poznansky’s novel explores what happens when Ben, a twenty-seven year old student returns home and meets Anita, a plain-spoken, spunky, uneducated redhead, freshly married to Lenny, Ben’s aging father. Behind his back, Ben and Anita find themselves increasingly drawn to each other. They take turns using an old tape recorder to express their most intimate thoughts, not realizing at first that their voices are being captured by him.

Dutch Flag

to Holland, and to Poetry-land, wherever that may be!

First, in a very new experience for me, I found that my article on editing, which went a bit viral on Huffington Post, has been translated into Dutch.

Wow.

Go, internet!

Second, in another first, Uvi Poznansky, who wrote the recently-released Stillpoint audiobook A Favorite Son (and whose audiobook for Apart from Love I’ve just finished editing — woohoo!) wrote a… um… poem about me.

Now, my mom’s a poet (and I’ll have more to say on that subject another time), so I’ve shown up in poems before before. Still. None (so far as I know) about me. This was incredibly touching. Here’s the poem, if you’d like to read it:

Behind the Scenes: How to Become Young Again (in an Audiobook)

A Favorite Son by Uvi Poznansky

Uvi Poznansky posted what I thought was a really interesting article about a part of our process in putting together the audiobook for A Favorite Son

Every book has its own challenges — to the writer, to the editor, and to the audiobook producer. In A Favorite Son, Uvi told a story from a single point of view, but in two separate timeframes: first, of Yonkle (Jacob) as an old man, talking to his own eldest son, Reuben, which was told in the past tense; and second, of young Jacob, as he confronts first his brother Esav (Esau) and then his father Isaac.

As always, I had a blast creating the two distinct-yet-related voices (as well as voices for Esav the Hunter and the other characters). The challenge that Uvi and I worked on was how to meld the two — how to create transitions that made it clear what was happening. I’ll let Uvi narrate the process:

Bright Idea of the Day: The Author's Voice

So, I started putting a post together recently with some resources for self-publishers. I came up with a wonderful overview about the process of self-publishing, Guy Kawasaki’s APE (Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur), Joel Friedlander’s excellent exploration of the process from a print designer’s perspective, A Self-Publisher’s Companion: Expert Advice for Authors Who Want to Publish, and Liz Castro’s fabulous introduction to creating ebooks, EPUB Straight to the Point.

Looking at that list, I thought, Huh, okay — all I need is a good introduction to producing your own audiobook.

Went to find it.

Couldn’t.

Well, I spoke with some friends at the Bay Area Independent Publishers Association, where the unofficial motto is, If you can’t find the book you want, write it yourself. Asked folks if they thought that I should write a guide to audiobook production.

They did.

So I think I am. I’m thinking of calling it The Author’s Voice: A Writers Guide to Recording and Producing Audiobooks.

Two New Audiobook Titles on the Way!

Apart from Love by Uvi Poznarsky

I’m excited to be able to announce that Stillpoint has been signed to produce two new audiobooks for novelist Uvi Poznarsky. First up is A Favorite Son, Poznarsky’s retelling of the Genesis story of Jacob and Esav. Told through the eyes of Jacob — both as an old man and as a boy — the novella looks at the emotional challenges that come with Jacob’s assumption of Esav’s birthright, taking his brother’s place as the favorite son.

The other title — a very appropriate one for Valentine’s Day — is Poznarsky’s contemporary novel of a love that won’t be denied, Apart from Love. I’ll be producing this title, and sharing the narration duties with the wonderfully talented Heather Jane Hogan.

More announcements coming soon!
